God, I wish it was enough to simply have enough talent for the job, but from my experience, that’s definitely not the case. You can be the goddamn Michelangelo of your craft, but there’s a hell of a lot more that goes into being successful as a creative.
But if talent isn’t enough, what do we really need as creatives?
The more research I’ve done, it looks like having a purpose behind your work is the key to building a strong foundation for your work. You may have come across a clip of a gentleman named Simon Sinek recently, talking about that very thing. He’s the author of Start With Why. Simon claims that when we establish the “why” of what we’re doing, we’ll be able to discover the “how”. We’ll also be able to overcome any and all obstacles that get in our way.
Now I get that finding the purpose behind what you’re doing isn’t always the easiest thing. That being said, it’s crucial to your success.
To help with finding that purpose, you can definitely read Simon’s book, or take his paid online course. Luckily, I tracked down a lovely and totally FREE resource created by Scott Dinsmore. It’s a lovely little online worksheet that asks you some key questions to help guide you to what your purpose can be.
